Regional Training for WOAH Wildlife Focal Points for Africa, conducted in Arusha, Tanzania

Header

The 6th cycle training workshop for Wildlife Focal Points (WFP) of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) was organised in Arusha, Tanzania, and was attended by 46 country focal points (13 women and 33 men), four of which attended using the YouTube LiveStream. The seminar combined a series of presentations from experts from WOAH Collaborating Centers, from the NGO Gorilla Doctors and from national focal points, a series of tabletop exercises, including the ALERT board game demo, and a field excursion to the nearby Arusha National Park.

Participants were able to learn more about wildlife diseases management, how to manage diseases events in low resources settings, and best practices including the system thinking approach to disease management.

The EBO-SURSY "ALERT" serious (board) game.

In preamble to this in-person meeting, a series of two webinars were organised in the course of November to address topics like wildlife disease notification and surveillance systems, wildlife trade, and environmental assessment tools through discussions, presentations and exercises. Up to 35 country participants attended the webinars (with a total of up to 51 overall participants, including speakers and WOAH staff). Of these national focal points,  85% found the webinars helpful, 92% of participants learned something new and 96% intend to put any of this new knowledge toward their professional tasks.
