Since 1998, WOAH (and before that : OIE) has the mandate from the WTO to officially recognise disease-free areas of countries for trade purposes. The procedure for the official recognition of disease status by the WOAH is voluntary and applies currently to six diseases. As per May this year, the status is as follows :
During the 87th General Session, the Assembly adopted Resolution No. 27 establishing the endorsement by WOAH of an official control programme for contagious bovine pleuropneumonia, for foot-and-mouth disease, for peste des petits ruminants and for dog-mediated rabies, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the chapters in the Terrestrial Animal Health Code (Terrestrial Code). Information published by WOAH is derived from declarations made by the Delegates of Members. WOAH is not responsible for the publication and maintenance of the endorsement of Members’ official control programmes on inaccurate information or non reporting to WOAH Headquarters of significant changes in the implementation of relevant measures in the Member subsequent to the time of endorsement of the official control programme:
