Strengthening One Health Governance in Tunisia: WOAH Supports the Establishment of the National Multisectoral Steering Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance.

As part of the Antimicrobial Resistance Multi-Partner Trust Fund  (AMR-MPTF)  Tunisia Project — “Supporting the Implementation of the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance in Tunisia through the One Health Approach” — the World Organisation for Animal Health’s  Sub-Regional Representation, in collaboration with FAO, WHO and UNEP, organized a multisectoral workshop dedicated to presenting the outcomes of the consultation “Supporting the Establishment and Functioning of the National Multisectoral Steering Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance in Tunisia.”

In partnership with the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, and Environment, this initiative aims to strengthen national governance and support the effective implementation of Tunisia’s National Action Plan on AMR, in line with the One Health approach.

The consultation provided an in-depth assessment of the national situation, proposed mechanisms for multisectoral coordination, and defined the mandate and responsibilities of the future National Interministerial Committee. The findings served as a foundation for the workshop, designed as a platform for dialogue to validate and enrich the proposed recommendations.

The specific objectives of the workshop were to:

  • Present the current status and stakeholder mapping related to AMR in Tunisia.
  • Propose and discuss mechanisms and modalities for multisectoral coordination to promote integrated, multisectoral, and multi-stakeholder governance of AMR in Tunisia.
  • Propose the terms of reference and mandate of the National AMR Executive Secretariat and its functional bodies (National Multisectoral Steering Committee – CNMP, National AMR Executive Secretariat – SE-RAM, National AMR Coordination Committee – CNC-RAM, and Thematic Working Groups – TWGs);

Discuss the modalities for establishing the National Multisectoral Steering Committee on AMR.

Sharing, Collective Reflection, and Co-Creation:

More than forty participants from the human, animal, plant, and environmental health sectors took part in the workshop. The national expert, Dr Habiba Mamlouk, presented the main deliverables of the consultation, followed by interactive sessions and group work aimed at refining proposals, deepening analyses, and consolidating the final outputs.

In a spirit of intersectoral collaboration, participants worked together to identify key stakeholders, map existing resources, review institutional and legal mechanisms, and define a clear structure for the future National Interministerial Committee.

This collective reflection process led to a shared vision and concrete operational guidance, marking a significant step forward toward integrated and sustainable governance for AMR control in Tunisia.

Through this activity, WOAH reaffirms its commitment—together with FAO, WHO, and UNEP—to supporting Tunisia in strengthening One Health coordination, in alignment with national efforts and the global strategy to combat antimicrobial resistance.

This activity was generously funded by the AMR MPTF Project.
