Kenya’s Director of Veterinary Services and WOAH Delegate, Dr. Allan Azegele, has unanimously been elected as the 21st Chairperson of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC). This prestigious appointment was announced on November 26, 2024, during the Codex Alimentarius Commission meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.  Dr. Azegele, who previously served as one of the Commission’s vice-chairpersons, will now step into the leadership role, succeeding Steve Wearne.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Azegele emphasized his unwavering commitment to advancing Codex’s mission to protect consumer health, promote fair food trade practices, and ensure inclusivity in global food systems. “I am deeply honored and humbled to accept this role, and I am committed to serving Codex with inclusivity and transparency,” Dr. Azegele said.

His appointment not only highlights his personal professionalism and dedication but also marks a significant moment for Kenya as it takes on a leadership role in shaping the future of global food safety and sustainability. This new chapter under Dr. Azegele’s leadership promises a future of safer, more equitable, and sustainable food systems, underpinned by science-based decision-making and collaborative efforts.
