P3V Project Video : Basic poultry autopsy

Header

In addition to the modules on Approach and Restraint, Clinical Examination of Ruminants and Domestic Carnivores, and Surgical Sutures in Veterinary Medicine, this 11-minute video was produced to review the chronological steps involved in performing a basic autopsy.

The video begins with a presentation of the equipment needed to perform an autopsy, followed by the biosafety equipment used by the operator, before presenting the various stages of the autopsy.

The practical steps involved in performing an autopsy are then presented as follows:

  • External examination of the bird.
  • Blood sampling.
  • Killing of the bird.
  • External examination of the carcass.
  • Opening of the carcass.
  • Examination of the internal organs of the carcass.
  • Taking biological samples

The need to take biological samples to aid in the diagnosis of the suspected pathology was reiterated, as were the qualities of a good sample. Finally, the proper management of waste, from cleaning the workplace and equipment to disinfecting the premises, was presented.

This educational video provides a solid foundation for acquiring technical skills and ensures that VPPs are better prepared to deliver animal health services to livestock farmers.
