As of 1 September 2024, the WOAH Director-General has appointed Dr. Neo Mapitse as new WOAH Sub-Regional Representative for Eastern Africa, based in Nairobi, Kenya.
This appointment follows the retirement of Dr. Samuel Wakhusama, the previous Representative, as of 31 August 2024.
Dr Mapitse took up the position in Nairobi on 26 September 2024.
The new Representative is a national of Botswana, veterinarian (BVMS, MRCVS), graduated from the Veterinary School of the University of Glasgow (United Kingdom), followed by a Masters’ degree (MSc) in Wild Animal Health awarded by the University of London (United Kingdom).
A former Deputy Representative and then Representative for the WOAH Sub region of Southern Africa from 2010 to 2014, Neo held various managerial positions at WOAH Headquarters in Paris as Deputy Head of WAHIAD (2014-2018), Head of Status Department (2018-2022) and Head of Regional Activities Department from 2022 – 2024.
