The Regional Representation for Africa of the World Organisation for Animal Health, together with its partners, led its Members in a training workshop to raise awareness on official control programmes for dog-mediated rabies and PPR, showcase its benefits for Members in line with the OIE standards and procedures for the endorsement of both programmes.
The three-day training workshop was supported by the One Health approach towards dog- mediated rabies and transboundary animal disease (OHRT) project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The meeting brought together international experts, officials responsible for the coordination of national animal health programmes and responsible for the development of national strategies for the control and eradication/elimination of PPR and rabies in their respective countries and in the region as well as the veterinarians involved in the preparation of applications for the OIE endorsement of official control programmes for PPR and/or dog-mediated rabies.

The PPR Secretariat and colleagues from Food and Agriculture Organisation of United Nations (FAO) also attended the meeting.
At the workshop, participants engagement and level of interest was high as shown in the topics presented highlighting relevant points to OIE standards and procedures for the endorsement of the official control programmes for PPR and dog- mediated rabies.
The Global Strategy for the Control and Eradication of PPR (GCES) launched in 2015 has initiated several efforts and raised high expectations towards control and eradication of PPR and official recognition of PPR free status. This is of keen interest for the OIE Members in the Africa region
