WOAH Sub-Regional Representation for Southern Africa was established in 2005 in Gaborone (Botswana) to cover all 16 member countries of, as well as to liaise with the regional economic community, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which also has its headquarters in Gaborone. The SADC member countries are : Angola, Botswana, Comoros (since 2017), the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The office is also entrusted with the liaison with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), with headquarters in Lusaka, Zambia.
The office became operational on January 1st, 2006 when the Sub-Regional Representative was appointed. It was at the time, the first sub-regional representation established by WOAH.
The current Representative is Dr. Moetapele Letshwenyo.
