The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) donated 100,000 doses of rabies vaccine to Mozambique’s Ministry of Agriculture, reinforcing the country’s efforts to eliminate dog-mediated human rabies by 2030.

The vaccines were officially handed over by WOAH’s Sub-Regional Representative for Southern Africa, Dr Moetapele Letshwenyo to the Secretary of State for the Sea and Fisheries within the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries (MAAP) Mr Momade Juizo during a ceremony in Maputo. The donation, made possible through funding support from the Government of Germany (BMZ OHRT Project), will enable the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS) of Mozambique to implement a mass dog vaccination campaign targeting high-risk areas across the country.

“In 2022, WOAH was proud to support the Republic of Mozambique with the donation of 50,000 rabies vaccine doses for dogs,” said the Sub-Regional Representative. “We commend your veterinary teams, community workers, and local partners for their dedication and the excellent results achieved. This success has strengthened the foundation for further progress.”

He added, “Today, as we hand over another 100,000 doses, our message is clear: let us make full and effective use of these vaccines to protect dogs, safeguard communities, and save human lives in Mozambique. I am sure these doses will support your national rabies control programme…”

In addition, WOAH offered technical and financial assistance to the DVS office and One Health partners in Mozambique to aid in developing a national rabies strategic plan; a road map to help the country achieve the worldwide objective of zero human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030. WOAH has encouraged Mozambique to draft a rabies national strategic plan and submit it for WOAH endorsement, which would unlock further support from partners and demonstrate government commitment.

The WOAH Delegate of Mozambique, Prof. Dr. Abel Chulundo also acknowledged the WOAH for this donation and reaffirmed commitment to work towards stopping rabies transmission among dogs and from dogs to humans ensuring that no more lives are lost to rabies.
