The picture shows owners who brought their donkeys for deworming but carry with them the stick which they use to beat their donkeys. In Ethiopia the Donkey Sanctuary works with local communities to improve working conditions of donkeys and mules. Wounds are a major problem and treating them as they occur is far cry from a sustainable solution. The veterinarian addresses the source of physical injury by working with communities: he has developed the use of an improved harness that is locally affordable, available and acceptable. He works to improve knowledge, attitude, beliefs and practices of animal owners, and involves working local stakeholders in the process.
