Regional Information Seminar for newly appointed OIE Delegates (Tunis)

The newly appointed OIE Delegates from 16 member countries of the OIE in Africa met in Tunis on 23 and 24 April 2013 for a regional information Seminar with the aim to present among other the concepts of good governance to strengthen animal health and safety of animal products at national level. The meeting was also organised to explain and clarify the roles and responsibilities of Delegates and focal points of the OIE.

The following themes and topics were presented and discussed:

  • OIE International Standards (Codes, Manuals and Guidelines) and the standard-setting procedure (elaboration of standards and participation of Members),
  • Obligations of notification by Members to the OIE by using the World Animal Health Information System (WAHIS),
  • The OIE PVS pathway, the Veterinary Legislation Support Programme (VLSP), the OIE support for veterinary education and the OIE laboratory twinning,
  • WTO/ SPS Agreement and OIE mediation procedure (dispute settlement)
  • The issues to be discussed by the World Assembly of Delegates at the 81th General Session (Paris, May 2013), and
  • The experiences of a former OIE Delegate.

This seminar has been very fruitful with interesting exchanges between participants and speakers of the OIE. It is generally held every two years and the last one was held in Nairobi in June 2011.
