The fundamentals of safety for animal health field workers: approaching and restraining cattle and dogs

Header

As part of the Professionalising Veterinary Paraprofessionals (P3V) project, WOAH spearheaded the creation of educational videos essential for the development of practical skills. Two of these videos cover fundamental skills for operator safety and animal welfare: approaching and restraining cattle, and approaching and restraining dogs.

Approaching and restraining cattle

This 7-minute, 32-second video aims to detail the rules to follow when approaching cattle and illustrates the various restraining techniques.

The restraint techniques presented fall into two main categories:

  • Controlling the head of a cow:
This technique uses a bull holder and a rope. It relies on the use of stimuli (with the bull holder and nose ring), the use of halters, and securing the head to a fixed support.
  • Controlling a cow’s limb: The video presents two specific techniques: securing a front limb and securing one or both hind limbs.

Approaching and restraining dogs

This video, which lasts 6 minutes and 36 seconds, reviews the rules and restraint techniques appropriate for dogs.

It highlights three main types of restraint techniques:

Controlling the dog’s mouth:

  • The methods demonstrated include the use of a muzzle and the use of a homemade or makeshift muzzle. These techniques are often used for dogs that allow themselves to be handled.
  • Controlling the dog’s head:
    • Two methods are presented: restraint using the skin fold on the neck and a second technique using a door to control the head.
  • Controlling the dog’s body:
    • This last technique demonstrates several methods for effective restraint by controlling the animal’s body.

These videos are essential educational resources for enhancing operator safety and quality of care by providing a clear and standardised visualization of the “correct course of action”.
