The OIE is saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Mohammed Abdel Razig Abdel Aziz on Saturday 16th January, 2021. As the then Under-Secretary of the Sudanese Ministry of Animal Resources, Dr Mohammed Abdel Razig Abdel Aziz served as OIE Delegate of the Sudan between September 2008 and October 2012.

He later he joined the African Union Inter-african Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) as Technical Advisor of the EU-funded Strengthening Veterinary Governance in Africa (VETGOV) programme, a joint propgramme with FAO and OIE which brought him – again – in close contact with the various bodies of, and individuals working at the OIE. He developed a keen interest in veterinary legislation, and took part in various regional initiatives, amongst which the first workshop on harmonisation of veterinary legislation for the Member States of the Inter-Governmental Authority for Development (IGAD), held in Khartoum, the capital of the Sudan in November 2014; and the last, for Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Member States, in Lusaka, Zambia, in July 2017.
He retired from the African Union in 2018 but continued to conduct consulting work. By the time of his death Dr. Mohamed was undertaking a consultancy for AU-IBAR to support national teams to update/review veterinary legislations in his native country of Sudan and in Libya and Somalia.
The OIE sends heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues, who have lost in Dr Mohamed a great veterinarian and humanitarian.
