Ghana Philip Salia
Dr Philip Kwame Bavy Salia was born in Tarkwa, Ghana on the 11th of May 1956. He attended St John?s College, Sekondi and St Louis Secondary School in Kumasi prior to his admission to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology to read Biochemistry. His love for Veterinary Medicine drove him to abandon this course at the University after one year and he left for the then Soviet Union in 1976 to study Veterinary Medicine.
Upon successful graduation as Veterinary Surgeon in 1983, he returned to Ghana from where he was posted to Pong-Tamale Veterinary College to help train middle level personnel in veterinary health care delivery.
His quest for academic exploits led him to pursue postgraduate studies (MSc) in Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics at the University of Reading, UK in 1984. Furthermore, between 1987 -1990, he undertook courses in Statistics in animal health and Livestock management information at the University of Reading, UK.
After serving in Pong Tamale for twenty one years he was appointed as District Director of Agriculture for Wa East in the Upper West Region from 2004- 2007. In 2008, when the position of Regional Veterinary Officer in charge of Upper West Region became vacant, the onus fell on Dr Salia who was appointed to oversee veterinary activities in that region.
In the year 2011, he was transferred to the Veterinary headquarters in Accra from where he rose to become the National Director of Veterinary Services in December 2012. He contributed to the success of the VSPA pilot programme co-funded by B&MGF, OIE and Ghana.
In spite of failing health, he did his best to provide technical direction to veterinary activities in Ghana. Death finally laid its icy hands on him on the 25th of December 2014.
The OIE addresses its deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of Dr. Salia
