Dr. Samuel Wakhusama, Representative, WOAH Sub-Regional Representation for Eastern Africa
Dr. Samuel Wakhusama, a distinguished Kenyan veterinarian, has concluded a remarkable career marked by an unwavering dedication to animal health and regional development. His departure from WOAH, after decades of service, leaves a profound impact on the veterinary field and the communities he served within the sub region of Eastern Africa.
Dr. Wakhusama’s journey began in the public sector, where he rose through the ranks at the (then) Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI, now KALRO). His expertise in veterinary research and his passion for improving animal welfare were evident from the outset. His contributions to the study of diseases such as leptospirosis and helminthiases were instrumental in advancing our understanding and control of these animal diseases.
Recognising his exceptional skills and experience, Dr. Wakhusama was appointed to various leadership roles within international organizations. His work with the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) showcased his ability to navigate complex global challenges and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
One of Dr. Wakhusama’s most notable achievements was his role in combating neglected animal diseases in Africa. As the AU-IBAR Continental Coordinator for the VACNADA project (“Vaccines for the Control of Neglected Animal Diseases in Africa”) , he spearheaded efforts to develop and implement innovative vaccination strategies. His leadership and expertise were instrumental in improving the health and well-being of countless animals across the continent.
In 2015, the then OIE Director – General appointed Dr Wakhusama as Deputy Sub-Regional Representative for East Africa and the Horn of Africa. Following the retirement of Dr. Walter Masiga, the first and former Representative, at the end of 2016, the Director General confirmed the appointment of Dr Wakhusama as Sub-Regional Representative for Eastern Africa, an office he held until his retirement.
One of the highlights during his tenure at WOAH, was when he led WOAH in the region to receive the recognition of the African Union for WOAH’s contribution to the eradication of rinderpest from the African continent, and a few years later, from the planet, as endorsed by the governing bodies of the then OIE, and FAO in 2011.
As we bid farewell to Dr. Samuel Wakhusama, we express our sincere gratitude for his invaluable contributions to the field of veterinary medicine and his unwavering dedication for his work to improving and strengthening animal health and welfare systems, through his policy contributions in Kenya and throughout Eastern Africa. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of veterinarians and researchers in Eastern Africa and the rest of the continent.
