The OIE Director General has appointed Dr Karim Tounkara as Deputy Regional Representative for Africa. Karim Tounkara is a veterinarian, holding a PhD in microbiology from Moscow Veterinary Academy and certificates in epidemiology, virology, serology and molecular biology.
He has more than 30 years of working experience at national and international levels in the field of animal diseases control. He was in the Senior Management of the Central Veterinary laboratory Bamako, Mali (home country) as the Head of Diagnosis and Research. He served as a consultant for both FAO and IAEA on many assignments in both Africa and Asia in the area of animal diseases control. He has been, for 5 years (2001-2006), an international consultant and staff member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) seconded to AU/IBAR as Regional Expert in Animal Disease Control for the Pan African Programme for the Control of Epizootics (PACE) and Quality assurance for SADC countries. He provided technical support to veterinary services of many African Union Member States in the Rinderpest eradication process.
In June 2006 Dr. Karim Tounkara joined African Union as Director of the Pan African Veterinary Vaccine Centre (PANVAC) of the African Union (Debre Zeit – Ethiopia) within the Department of Rural Economy and Agriculture. He retired from the African Union in November 2014
