Dr Claudia Schoene

Dr Claudia Schoene joined the OIE Sub-Regional Representation for Southern Africa in July 2017 as Programme Officer. The position had remained vacant since the transfer of Dr Patrick Bastiaensen from the Gaborone to the Nairobi office in January 2013. Claudia will coordinate the ongoing “Technical Support for Namibia in eliminating Rabies in Dogs” project, funded by the Federal Republic of Germany, as well as provide overall technical advice and guidance on the control of zoonotic diseases.

She will furthermore support OIE’s regional mandate on control and eradication of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) and on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the prudent use of antibiotics in animals.

Claudia graduated in Germany and also obtained her Doctorate and a Diploma in Animal Health Management at the Free University of Berlin (Freie Universität Berlin). She holds Specialist Certificates in Veterinary Epidemiology and Tropical Veterinary Medicine, and a MSc in Wildlife Management (University of Pretoria).

For many years, she worked in animal health, welfare and conservation projects in Africa, Asia and Europe. In 2008 Claudia returned to Germany. As scientific researcher (Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut) she dealt mainly with notifiable disease outbreaks and risk assessments (especially avian influenza). In 2011 she joined a federal information centre for biological threats and special pathogens (Robert Koch-Institut). Since October 2012 she worked as freelance veterinarian (Germany), environmental and wildlife consultant (Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda).
