Liberia joins the World Organisation for Animal Health as the 179th OIE Member Country and 53rd Member of the OIE Regional Commission for Africa. Liberia, a country in West Africa, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire has participated in some OIE activities as observer before being a Member.
First nation in Africa to gain independence in 1847, Liberia is governed since January 16, 2006 by the 2011 Nobel prize winner, Her Excellency President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, first elected female Head of State. The country is a member of ECOWAS and the African Union and is a founding member of the United Nations. The Veterinary Authority is represented by the Department of Animal Health Services of the Liberian Ministry of Agriculture.
