On 10 October 2022, Dr. Francesco Valentini officially joined WOAH as a Programme Officer to the Representative of the WOAH Sub-Regional Representation for North Africa, appointed in Tunis, Tunisia. Francesco is replacing Dr. Alessandro Ripani who returned to his home Institute, the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale (IZS) of Teramo in September 2022.

Francesco’s role is to assist the Representative, Dr. Rachid Bouguedour, in developing and implementing plans and objectives for the Representation, with the aim of providing WOAH Members in the sub-region (Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia) with appropriately adapted local services in order to strengthen veterinary public health. He also assists in budgeting and monitoring expenditure, capacity building activities, as well as management, financial, administrative and diplomatic operations.

An Italian national, Francesco graduated with honours in Veterinary Medicine and from the Specialisation School in Animal Health, Livestock Farming and Animal Production, both at the University of Bologna. Moreover, he holds an Advanced Course degree in Wildlife Management, Conservation Medicine and Public Health from the University of Teramo.

Before joining WOAH Francesco attended various professional trainings and won two research grants: the first, of the Italian Society of Swine Pathology and Farming (SIPAS), was about the contrast of Antimicrobial Resistance by the promotion of an antibiotic-free pig supply chain; the latter, of the University of Turin, was part of an Horizon 2020 project on ASF biosecurity and risk management practices in domestic pigs and wild boars, aimed to develop evidence-based, practical strategies to prevent the spread of the disease.
