ALERT

An educational tool to strengthen One Health surveillance: the collaborative ALERT game

Header

ALERT is a collaborative board game designed to strengthen the engagement of the various stakeholders involved in One Health surveillance of zoonotic diseases. It is intended for both local communities and professionals working at local, decentralised and national levels in public health, animal health and environmental sectors.

  • Collaborative: promotes dialogue and coordination among stakeholders.
  • Multi-level: adapted to local, decentralised and national levels.
  • One Health surveillance: highlights roles and responsibilities in addressing health threats.
  • Good practices: supports the promotion of surveillance practices and stakeholder engagement.

ALERT was created under the European Union (EU)-funded EBO-SURSY project, and its deployment is continuing through the ZOOSURSY project, implemented within the framework of the One Health Team Europe Initiative (TEI) funded by the EU Global Gateway.

The game was developed by CIRAD, IRD, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and the Institut Pasteur to support One Health surveillance, promote good surveillance practices, highlight the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders, and encourage intersectoral dialogue.

Educational games are increasingly recognized as effective tools for awareness-raising and behaviour change, particularly in the field of infectious and zoonotic diseases.

In West Africa, for example (Grand-Bassam, Dakar and Yaoundé), the ALERT game has already been used during facilitator training sessions aimed at amplifying its impact among communities and institutions. According to WOAH, this initiative contributes to placing communities at the center of disease surveillance systems while encouraging closer intersectoral collaboration.

As zoonotic disease threats continue to evolve, innovative awareness-raising tools such as  ALERT game can help bridge the gap between technical knowledge and community engagement, thereby strengthening the resilience of surveillance systems.
